We’ve picked up some new medals for the trophy cabinet at this year’s prestigious Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show on 26 June.

Michael Oak Waldorf School has teamed up with Flagstone for their latest fund raiser in De Waterkant on the evening of 20 June. There will be art on auction from South African luminaries such as Philip Briel, as well as a tasting hosted by Bruce and Flagstone hampers to be won.

On Wednesday 17 June there will be a gourmet evening at Harveys Restaurant which is at the Winchester Mansions Hotel, 221 Beach Road, Sea Point. Bruce Jack will be hosting and has put together a list of wines hand-picked to accompany each of the six courses.

Vintage, Harvest, Crush – call it what you will – it has finally started in earnest. And it is different. The greatest influence on the harvest has been the recent growing season (August 2008 to February 2009). We experienced a cold, late winter. Then September arrived much, much cooler and wetter than the long-term average recordings.

Another certificate is on its way to join the growing Flagstone Winery gallery in Somerset West. This time from Düsseldorf, where Flagstone Longitude 2006 has just been rated an “excellent” three stars at the ProWein 2009 Premium Select Wine Challenge.

I shot down to Bredasdorp yesterday as I had to apply in person at the Traffic Department for vehicle registration certificates for our truck and delivery bakkie. Bredasdorp is the centre of the Overberg’s wheat-growing and sheep-breeding valley and is an hour’s drive east of Cape Town.
