Jonathan Ray features Flagstone and Bruce in the Daily Telegraph

Daily Telegraph wine correspondent Jonathan Ray has a feature on South African wine in the context of the braai, inspired by the Wines of South Africa (WoSA) stand at this year’s London International Wine & Spirit Fair. The article features quotes from Bruce on how to tackle the art of pairing wine with the various [...]

Kalk Bay Harbour Wall

Wrinkles. Scare-etched by our southern sun into the faces of real fishermen, each millimetre representing another high-seas adventure thriller – around our Cape of Storms.
There’s an old guy, long past hauling the line himself, who watches the fish come into Kalk Bay Harbour. His name is Fred. Fred sells bait, sells fish, sells stories. Sometimes [...]

The Braai

Obviously, the braai has played a central role in our advancement as a species. The oldest archaeological evidence of the braai was discovered at the Sterkfontein Caves in the north of our country and is about one million years old. So South Africans invented the braai.
But that’s only partially accurate. As all human beings originated [...]

How wine’s value can grow

It’s true that you can make money more easily from the wine industry than in the wine industry. Bottle suppliers, distributors, exporters, traders, machinery and engineering suppliers, overseas agents, retailers… the list goes on and on.

2009 Harvest Update

Vintage, Harvest, Crush – call it what you will – it has finally started in earnest. And it is different. The greatest influence on the harvest has been the recent growing season (August 2008 to February 2009). We experienced a cold, late winter. Then September arrived much, much cooler and wetter than the long-term average recordings.

Bredasdorp is the centre of the Overberg

I shot down to Bredasdorp yesterday as I had to apply in person at the Traffic Department for vehicle registration certificates for our truck and delivery bakkie. Bredasdorp is the centre of the Overberg’s wheat-growing and sheep-breeding valley and is an hour’s drive east of Cape Town.

What our Biodiversity message means to a winemaker

Since the Second World War global agriculture has without malicious intent embarked on a self-destructive path of unbalanced chemical fertilisation. It’s a long, tortuous story that continues to leave farmers underpaid and undervalued. This trajectory has lead to unhealthy, unbalanced soil that cannot fully hope to support the plants and crops swaying in the wind [...]

The Error for Margin

Businesses fly because profit margins are comfortable. The wine industry isn’t one of those. No, somehow there’s a strange beauty that drives it. Even the really awe-inspiring, big guns with shelf-flooding brands like Blossom Hill can’t continually boast double digit profitability – the wine industry isn’t therefore very attractive to stock market quarterly reporting.
Short-term strategies [...]

Rain

June 28, 2006
Rain does funny things to a farmer’s view of the world. I came home from a recent trip to the UK, landing at Cape Town airport in a winter storm. An evil north westerly wind whipped around the peninsular, tearing at waterfalls of heavy Atlantic rain. Before our Table Bay harbour breakwater was [...]
