The History of Nobu
The history of Nobu Matsuhisa’s restaurant brand is an interesting one. Matsuhisa left Japan aged 24 in 1973 to set up shop in Peru and then Alaska before hitting the big time in Beverley Hills in 1987. There he opened “Matsuhisa” on La Cienega Blvd. in Beverly Hills. The restaurant instantly hit it off with the in-crowd and became a regular haunt for, amongst others, Robert DeNiro, who suggested the two of them set up a restaurant in Tribeca, NYC. In 1993 NOBU opened it’s doors to rapturous critical acclaim. New NOBUs were subsequently opened in Milan, London, Greece, Dallas, Tokyo, Honolulu, Dubai and now Cape Town.
Nobu’s friendship with DeNiro got him a part in Scorsese’s film Casino, as a wealthy patron of DeNiro’s casino.
